What I Won’t Give Up

Having been born and raised in an age centered on the analog, I find myself today clinging on for dear life, bewildered by our rapidly advancing digital society. At the very least, in the process by which I meet flowers, converse with them, and give them design, the power of the digital is unnecessary. And yet, when I want to know a flower more deeply, or to share the charm of more flowers with others, digital tools can sometimes be of help.

Unless I draw a clear line between what may be entrusted to the digital and what I will never give up, I end up merely filling my head with knowledge and information, while the powers of observation and imagination that come from acting are left to wither.

For me, flower design is this: to learn much with my own two feet, to put to use the knowledge gained from experience, and—when that act ties together well into expression—to feel, powerfully, the joy and the purpose of living together with flowers.
