The kimono is the essence of the Japanese sense of beauty. It was in the Edo period that dyeing techniques — yuzen above all — and the craft of sewing became truly assured, and perhaps in answer to that, people were intoxicated by the gorgeous kimono that appeared in kabuki and ukiyo-e. Since ancient times, flowers have been an indispensable motif in kimono patterns; and a woman who wore a kimono with style was herself likened to a flower. “Walking, she is a lily.” The sense of beauty that Edo took pride in wearing, entrusted now to flowers.
