From Saturday 24 October 2026, flower artist Keita Kawasaki presents HANA GRAPHIC ART Exhibition in KYOTO at SHIMADAI GALLERY KYOTO. Admission is free and no reservation is required.
The exhibition brings together HANA GRAPHIC ART and Kyo-Yuzen, one of Kyoto’s most refined textile traditions — the first time the two have been combined.

About the exhibition
HANA GRAPHIC ART is Keita Kawasaki’s lifework: an art form that captures the single moment when a plant is at its most alive, and reconstructs it as a flat, graphic composition. Rather than arranging or decorating with flowers, it re-edits their form, colour, rhythm and vitality through the language of graphic art. The result is at once botanical, painterly and architectural — a visual experience that belongs to no existing category.
New works with hand-painted Kyo-Yuzen
For this exhibition, HANA GRAPHIC ART has been combined with hand-painted Kyo-Yuzen for the first time. Working with the Kyoto atelier Senshou Ichikawa, a single flower is transformed into a kimono — a new form of art born from a centuries-old craft. These pieces are shown alongside the gold and silver leaf folding screens from which the series originated.
WAKA, RINKA and folding screen works
The exhibition gathers several series in one space: WAKA, painted on Echizen handmade washi paper with a 1,500-year history; RINKA, created with Kanazawa gold leaf and platinum leaf; and folding screen works in gold and silver leaf whose surfaces shift in appearance as time passes. Together they offer two contrasting experiences of beauty — one that holds its brilliance permanently, and one that deepens with age.
A registered cultural property as the setting
SHIMADAI GALLERY KYOTO occupies a machiya townhouse built in 1883 and registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The quiet character of the building, carried down from the Edo period, meets the momentary vitality of the flowers — a pairing possible only in this space.

About the artist
Born in Tokyo, Keita Kawasaki graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts (CCA) in 1982. A leading figure in contemporary Japanese flower design, he directed the Mami Flower Design School from 2006 to 2013 before founding KTION Inc. in 2014 to widen his range as an artist. In 2015 he was named one of 27 FORMIDABLE FLORISTS representing the world by a Belgian publisher, and in 2025 he held his first overseas solo exhibition at Xin Fang Chun Tea House, a historic building in Taipei.
